SportsBytes: eNewsletter for Sports Administrators

Welcome to the July edition of SportsBytes, our online newsletter for sports administrators.

Thank you for your responses to last month’s eMarketing Center survey! We received lots of great feedback, which we summarize in our What’s New section. Check it out below.

We offered a $10 Starbucks gift card to the first 7 respondents, and our readers took that seriously! The lucky 7 logged in within 4 minutes after the email was sent to submit their responses. That was quick–we have some caffeine fiends out there!

Thank you again for your feedback. We are listening and you can look forward to more resources and assets coming your way. Our goal is to make Active’s software and services the best and easiest-to-use in the market and we appreciate your help in making that happen. Feel free to contact us directly with any comments or feedback by sending an email to ActiveSports@ActiveNetwork.com.

Regards,

ActiveSports Team

How to Champion a Positive Sports Culture that Catches On
July 27th 3:00pm PDT

So many adults confuse youth sports with the intensity of pro sports–it’s important to reinforce that kids are playing for personal development and fun, not winning at all costs. Our next webinar focuses on addressing this issue and offers suggestions for building a positive sports culture for your organization. Register today for the PCA Positive Sports Culture webinar!

This presentation will demonstrate that no matter what your role is in your sports organization, you can help build a healthy attitude that gets adults excited and aligned around creating a sports program to grow kids into great adults. You’ll learn:

  • What culture is and how you can change it.
  • Why a strong culture will encourage adults to work together to create a better, more fun environment.
  • How leading from within and using “artifacts” will set the tone for the community.
  • Why selecting a Culture Change team will get people to care and invest in your values.
  • What recognizing small wins and reinforcing them will do to ensure your positive culture grows and endures.

Solana Beach Little League Knocks It Out of the Park with 100% Online Operations

Active Client Since: 2004

Dugout Details
Solana Beach Little League (SBLL) is an all volunteer, non-profit organization, providing an opportunity to play recreational baseball for boys and girls between the ages of five and twelve for 53 years. SBLL is comprised of five divisions, Majors, AAA–Gold, AAA–Silver, AA and T–Ball, operating under one Board of Directors. The League has approximately 430 kids on 36 teams. In 2007, SBLL lost to Chandler, AZ in the West Regional Finals, ending their season one game away from the Little League World Series in Williamsport.

SBLL teamed up with Active Network 6 years ago to lighten the workload for its volunteers, save money and bring operations online. The League uses Active’s free eteamz website to connect with players and parents, as well as online registration software to get players signed up. Prior to using Active, SBLL was using manual, paper–based processes that took too much time and effort, creating more work for league volunteers who would rather be out on the field.

Winning Formulas from Scott Evans, League Registrar
Why did SBLL choose Active’s technology?
Not only was Active an experienced and reliable partner in the industry, but the company is also the Official Technology Partner of Little League Baseball.

What is eteamz?
eteamz from ActiveSports is a free website that allows us to publish league and team information. We use it to post standings, schedules, wins and losses, field conditions and slideshow photo galleries. Having the website helps us manage our teams and keep parents up–to–date–it’s a great, free way for us to stay connected with our community.

What do you think about online registration?
Online registration makes it all easier. It’s so much more convenient for families and cuts out the data entry our staff had to do with paper registration forms. Except for a small handful of walk–up registrations at tryouts, we get 100% of our sign ups online. We don’t really offer any other option and that works for parents, players and our volunteers–no one liked dealing with the hassle of paper registration. It’s really easy to use.

What else do you use in Active’s system that is helpful?
We use the system to send a lot of broadcast emails. It’s a simple way to communicate anything the Board wants parents to know. This includes league announcements, important dates like Opening Day, and fundraiser information. We don’t really need to promote or market our league; we just need to keep clear lines of communication with parents about the season.

We also rely on the reports in the registration system. The reporting gives us the data we need to do age analyses so we know exactly how many kids we have and can form the teams and divisions from there.

“It’s easy, affordable and automated. You just can’t beat that.”

– Scott Evans, Registrar, Solana Beach Little League

Team Huddle: Meet an ActiveSports Applications Expert!

Jamie Wells
Technical Sales Engineer

Stephanie Snaman

I started my career at Active in July of 2006 as an Account Executive for lacrosse and hockey organizations. A year later, I transitioned into my current role and now act as the resident expert on our sales team for the various hosted applications offered within the sports market here at Active. Currently, we offer six different hosted applications. While my heart still remains with lacrosse as I’ve been a lacrosse player my entire life, I find it very rewarding to have the opportunity solve problems related to all sorts of youth sports organizations on a daily basis.

Growing up in a very sports oriented family, I spent most of my childhood on a field, court, or diamond. I settled on lacrosse and basketball through high school and went on to play lacrosse in college. After my university days ended, I found myself living in Southern California and found a new sports passion...surfing. Since this epic discovery and much to my girlfriend’s dismay, I’ve spent most of my vacation days since then travelling to surf spots throughout North and Central America to places like Mexico, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

In addition to my awesome team here at Active, I’m currently a member of two others. I compete on a club lacrosse team filled with “has beens” trying to relive the glory years (seldom successfully) and I coach a junior varsity HS lacrosse team in town. Coaching a local team allows me to give back to my community, provides me with first hand experience to the difficulties faced by coaches and administrators, and most importantly forces me to grow personally by working through the challenges created by coaching 14, 15, and 16 year old kids. Many of my co–workers here at Active also spend some of their time as coaches and there is definitely a unique sense of camaraderie amongst all of us in ActiveSports. I think this camaraderie contributes to the success we’ve enjoyed so far and hopefully to the successes we help our customers achieve each season.
