A Script for Redefining "Winner"
By Positive Coaching Alliance
 |
|
One of the key principles of Positive Coaching Alliance’s live Double–Goal Coach® workshops and Double–Goal Coach Online Course is Redefining "Winner." Youth sports parents and coaches can use this script to help youth athletes look beyond the scoreboard and define winning in terms of effort, learning and bouncing back from mistakes. This script addresses relatively young baseball players, but with just a few adjustments based on sport and your players’ ages, you can deliver the core message in your own voice.

League: Lexington Youth Soccer Association
Location:Lexington, KY
Website URL: https://www.lysa.org
Active Client Since: 2005
Located in Lexington, Kentucky, the Lexington Youth Soccer Association (LYSA) offers recreational and competitive soccer to adults and children, as well as a new program for children with disabilities. On average, there are between 2000 and 2500 athletes playing in 2 seasons annually. The LYSA has a 16–member working board and one registrar, Lois Stephens and Nina O’Leary serves as Office Manager. Lois is responsible for processing all registrations and relies on Active’s LeagueOne and ClubReg software to help her accomplish this large feat.
Before Active’s software was implemented, LYSA processed up to 5,000 handwritten registrations manually. It was time–consuming, frustrating and impossible to organize. "We would have stacks of checks piled up, waiting to be deposited," noted Nina. We fielded phone calls at all hours with requests for late entries and excuses for missing checks. We needed a change."
LYSA teamed up with ActiveSports five years ago and implemented the LeagueOne and ClubReg systems to organize their players and financials. Nina recalls that they immediately saw a drastic reduction in time spent on administrative tasks and no longer had to chase down payments. There were no more stacks of checks to deal with and parents were efficiently notified about important dates or outstanding paperwork and fees with the ClubReg email reminder tool. Parents enjoy the convenience and control of being able to access their online account to update personal information, which is a huge time–saver for LYSA staff. It’s also much easier for Lois to reconcile her data and report to the state on players and pay fees. Because Kentucky Youth Soccer uses LeagueOne, they have real–time access to player data and reporting is more accurate.
Currently, registration for adult programs is now at 90–95% online and children’s programs are at 80–85% online. Lois now has time to help Board members with team creations, communicating team assignments to coaches and league directors, and other tasks that wouldn’t be possible without Active’s system. "When I think back to what we did, and all the paperwork… we don’t have to do any of that anymore," says Nina. "It’s all electronic now."
Advice for other leagues from Nina O’Leary
- When searching for a software solution provider, look for a company with longevity and check their references.
- It was immediately evident to us that online registration was an improvement for everyone. It is worth investing in!
- The player transaction costs are minimal when compared to the staff hours (and salaries) you will have to increase to process registrations manually.

I began my career with Active in July 2006 and have spent the majority of my time helping state soccer association customers get up and running in our LeagueOne software. I started playing sports at a young age, and it has been a great privilege to meet and work with so many state and national staff and volunteers that make youth sports programs possible.
After years of playing soccer and basketball, I finally found my passion in college: rugby. I spend the vast majority of my time, energy and disposable income training with my San Diego club team and traveling to our games across the country. Aside from the enjoyment I get being a volunteer administrator for my rugby club, it also helps me relate better to my clients and really understand their needs. I am so thankful for all of the wonderful career opportunities and great friendships that sports have afforded me, and am excited about how much potential rugby has to grow here in the U.S.
I have been fortunate enough to be a part of some very successful teams—the highlight definitely came this fall when we won the Division 1 National Championship! I consider Active to be another successful team that I am a member of. There is a strong sense of teamwork and pride here at Active and I really appreciate the unique opportunity to work with so many like-minded and passionate people every day.
